Photonic Nanojet engineering: Focal point shaping with scattering phenomena of dielectric microspheres

چکیده
We experimentally engineer Nanojets produced by dielectric spheres by varying the illumination and observe the effect with a high-resolution interference microscope (HRIM). Converging and diverging spherical wavefronts and BesselGauss beams are considered. We find that the diverging wavefront pushes Nanojets away from the surface of the sphere without change of the spot size. This allows earning several micrometers of working distance contrary to the Nanojet confined at the sphere’s surface. When the radius of curvature of the incident wavefront is greater than about 5 times the sphere size, the Nanojet moves back to the sphere surface like it is found for plane wave incidence. On-axis BesselGauss beam illumination with the central lobe covering the whole sphere leads to the same results as the plane wave case. Off-axis Bessel beam illumination can generate multiple-spot Nanojets. We demonstrate the separation of such spots of about 220 nm at 642 nm. This separation is smaller than the feature sizes defined by the diffraction limit at this wavelength. We discuss briefly applications of engineered Nanojets for nano-lithography and near-field sensing.

Generation of highly confined optical bottle beams by exploiting the photonic nanojet effect
We report on the generation of photonic nanojets, which resemble optical bottle beams. They are realized by manipulating the illumination of dielectric microspheres. As illumination we use the outer region of deliberately truncated Bessel-Gauss beam or a focused Gaussian beam with intentionally induced spherical aberrations. For the Bessel-Gauss beam possessing a single side lobe only, the nano...
متن کاملHighly efficient optical coupling and transport phenomena in chains of dielectric microspheres.
Using the generalized multiparticle Mie theory, we investigate optical coupling and transport through chains of dielectric microspheres. We identify two distinct coupling mechanisms of optical transport in terms of the coupling efficiency between neighboring microspheres, namely, evanescent coupling and nanojet coupling. We demonstrate that perfect whispering gallery mode propagation through a ...

We detect by optical microscopy Au and fluorescent nanoparticles (NPs) during their motion in water-based medium, using an array of dielectric microspheres that are patterned in a microwell array template. The microspheres act as lenses focusing the light originating from a microscope objective into so-called photonic nanojets that expose the medium within a microfluidic channel. When a NP is r...
متن کاملHigh-Density Optical Data Storage Enabled by the Photonic Nanojet from a Dielectric Microsphere
We discuss the usage of the photonic nanojet to detect deeply subwavelength pits in a metal substrate for the purpose of high-density optical data storage. Three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) computational solutions of Maxwell’s equations are used to analyze and design the system. We find that nanojet-illuminated pits having lateral dimensions of only 100 150nm yield a 40-dB ...
متن کاملQuasi one-dimensional light beam generated by a graded-index microsphere.
An optically illuminated micron-scale dielectric sphere can generate a photonic nanojet - a nonresonant propagating beam phenomenon of high amplitude, narrow waist, and substantial sensitivity to the presence of nanometer-scale particles and geometric features located within the beam. Via three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain computational electrodynamics modeling of illuminated grade...
